A two-team quiz is the most reliable group game there is: no equipment, no rules to learn, and everybody is involved the whole time. But most of them are ruined by the same two mistakes — one team pulls ahead early and the game dies, or one loud person answers everything.
The format below fixes both. It takes about 40 minutes and needs nothing but a phone.
The format, step by step
How many teams?
Two. Three teams sounds fairer but halves how often each person gets to answer, and the energy drops.
How big should a team be?
Anything from one to ten. Above ten, split into two rooms and run two games.
How do I split the teams?
Never by skill — by something arbitrary like birth month. Deliberately balanced teams make people self-conscious about being the "weak" pick.
How long should it run?
Six categories, roughly 40 minutes. Stop while people still want more.
Who reads the questions?
Either a neutral host, or the phone itself if you are using an app that shows the question and hides the answer.
How long per question?
Ten seconds for easy questions, twenty for hard ones. Count out loud — the countdown is most of the tension.
Scoring that keeps the game close
This is the part most people get wrong.
What is the basic scoring?
Use three tiers: 200 points for easy, 400 for medium, 600 for hard. A single flat point value makes an early lead unrecoverable.
Why tiered scoring?
A team four questions behind can catch up with two hard ones. That keeps everyone playing to the last question.
Should a wrong answer lose points?
No. Penalties make quiet players stop guessing, and guessing is where the fun is.
Can the other team steal?
Yes — if a team passes or runs out of time, offer it to the other side for half the points. It keeps both teams listening.
How do I break a tie?
One closest-number question: "How many bones are in the human body?" Nearest answer wins. It ends cleanly with no argument.

The rotating answerer
Only one nominated person per team may speak the answer, and the role passes after every question. Everyone else whispers.
The youngest-first rule
In a mixed-age group, the youngest player gets first refusal on every question.
The no-repeat rule
Nobody may answer twice in a row, even if they know it.
